What does a website cost in Tanzania? 2026 prices in TZS
Website quotes in Tanzania run from a hundred thousand shillings to tens of millions. We collected the prices Tanzanian web designers and hosts publish, explain what moves a quote, and add up what a site costs to own for three years.
The short answer
Going by the prices Tanzanian web designers publish, a small business website costs about TZS 120,000 to 800,000 for a simple template build, TZS 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 for an online store, and TZS 2,600,000 or more for a custom design. A domain and hosting add about TZS 80,000 to 185,000 a year, and maintenance, if you pay for it, more again.
Those are published list prices from a handful of vendors, not a survey of the whole market. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not as a rule.

What a regional agency charges
Agencies selling across East Africa quote much higher. Quest Designers, a Kenyan agency that sells in Tanzania, published these ranges in April 2026 (prices exclude VAT):
| Type of site | US dollars | Shillings, as published |
|---|---|---|
| Basic brochure site | $100 to $750 | TZS 300,000 to 2,000,000 |
| Professional business site | $1,000 to $5,000 | TZS 2.7M to 13.5M |
| Booking or tourism site | $1,500 to $8,000 | TZS 4M to 21.5M |
| Online store with mobile money | $2,000 to $15,000 | TZS 5.4M to 40M |
| Custom web application | $5,000 to $25,000 | TZS 13.5M to 67M |
The gap between the two lists is the gap between a template with your content dropped in and a site designed, written and engineered around your business. Both have a place.
Running costs: domain, hosting and maintenance
| Item | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| .co.tz domain | TZS 22,500 first year, TZS 24,000 renewal | DUHosting (excluding VAT) |
| .tz domain | TZS 90,000 first year, TZS 100,000 renewal | DUHosting (excluding VAT) |
| .com domain | TZS 50,000 a year | DUHosting (excluding VAT) |
| Entry shared hosting | From TZS 55,000 a year | SakuraHost |
| Shared hosting with backups and a free .co.tz domain | TZS 159,000 a year | SakuraHost "Sungura" plan |
| Virtual private server | From TZS 27,800 to 35,000 a month (both figures appear on the page) | SakuraHost |
| Website maintenance | TZS 10,000 to 50,000 a month | Isack Digital |
Check the renewal price, not just the first year. Hosting and domain offers are often cheapest in year one.
What a basic site costs to own for three years
The design fee is only the first bill. Here is a worked example for a basic business site with a .co.tz domain, using the published prices above:
| Three years of | Lean | Looked after |
|---|---|---|
| .co.tz domain (register, then renew twice) | TZS 70,500 | TZS 70,500 |
| Hosting | TZS 165,000 (entry plan) | TZS 477,000 (plan with backups) |
| Maintenance | TZS 360,000 (TZS 10,000 a month) | TZS 1,800,000 (TZS 50,000 a month) |
| Running costs | TZS 595,500 (about US$226) | TZS 2,347,500 (about US$892) |
| Plus a basic site from the table above | TZS 300,000 | TZS 800,000 |
| Three-year total | TZS 895,500 (about US$340) | TZS 3,147,500 (about US$1,196) |
In both cases, running the site for three years costs about as much as building it, or more. That is why a cheap build on slow, unmaintained hosting is rarely the bargain it looks like: you keep paying for it, and it keeps losing customers.
What moves a quote up or down
- Pages and templates. Ten pages built from one template cost far less than ten individually designed pages.
- Design. A theme with your colours is cheap. A custom design built around your customers costs more and usually converts better.
- Content. Writing, photography and translation are often excluded. Ask.
- Features. Online payments, booking, multiple languages, member areas and search each add work.
- Integrations. Mobile money, WhatsApp, a CRM or an accounting system need setup and testing. See how mobile money checkouts work.
- Speed and search. Making pages fast on mobile data and readable by Google and AI assistants takes deliberate work that cheap builds skip.
- Who looks after it. Hosting, backups, updates and security either cost money every month or cost more when something breaks.
Red flags in a cheap quote
- The domain or hosting will be registered in the designer’s name, not yours.
- Contact forms, galleries or other basic features are “available on request” at extra cost.
- No mention of backups, SSL or software updates.
- “SEO included” with no detail of what that means.
- A heavy page-builder theme that loads slowly on a mid-range phone. Test the designer’s past sites on your own phone, on mobile data.
- No written list of what you get at handover: logins, files and access.
When a cheap site is the right call
If you need a simple online presence quickly and your customers find you through referrals, a template site in the TZS 120,000 to 800,000 range can be perfectly sensible. Make sure the domain is yours, the site works well on a phone, and someone is responsible for backups.
Invest more when the website has to win customers on its own: when you sell online, compete on Google, sell to overseas buyers, or want an AI agent answering enquiries. That is the work we do for businesses in Tanzania, with one fixed quote in US dollars after a free review. For prices in the USA, the UAE and India, see what a small business website costs.
